The Mining and Minerals Division of the New Mexico Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) is seeking public comment regarding a remediation and restoration study at the San Juan Mine located in San Juan County, approximately 16 miles northwest of Farmington. Mining began in the 1970s and for decades it supplied coal to the adjacent San Juan Power Generating Station.
In 2023, the State Legislature passed the San Juan Generating Station Facility and Mine Remediation and Restoration Study Act, NMSA 1978, § 74-4H-3 (2023), authorizing EMNRD to contract with third-party professionals to develop an independent reclamation and restoration planning document.
EMNRD has initiated this process and is now seeking public comments on what impacted communities consider specific, measurable steps for potential cleanup of the generating facility and mine while prioritizing employment of workers that were previously employed at the facility and mine.
To the extent allowed by applicable laws, EMNRD and the department of environment are authorized to consider the results of this study in any permitting actions related to the generating facility or mine.
Please visit the website “sanjuanmine.com” to learn more about the study and provide public comments. The comment period will remain open for at least 45 days from August 5 through September 19, 2024.
