A seemingly normal Saturday morning quickly turned critical when Lisa Verdure noticed her husband, Michel, exhibiting signs of a stroke. Michel was rushed to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where Dr. Justin Cappuzzo was able to restore Michel’s speech and mobility within 15 minutes.

Kathi Heslin is back to enjoying Sunday dinners with her family, thanks to the quick action of her brother-in-law. Bob Young, a retired EMT and volunteer at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center recognized Kathi’s stroke symptoms immediately and called 911. Learn more about the state-of-the-art care that helped Novant Health doctors remove the deadly blood clot from her brain in less than 7 minutes.

Brian Laughey traded in his work boots for a white coat in a bold career switch from selling plumbing supplies to becoming a board-certified cardiologist. Inspired by a positive experience with a doctor, he went back to school and now treats patients at Novant Health Cardiology – Kernersville.

Heather and Phil Freeman didn't know what to expect when their son Riggs was born with Pierre Robin syndrome and a cleft palate. As first-time parents, they were initially anxious but found reassurance through the exceptional care of Dr. Michael Jaskolka and the multidisciplinary team at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. When Robert Landreth was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2020, he wasn't sure what his future held. He was only 32 when he met Dr. Rashid Janjua with Novant Health Brain & Spine Surgery - Kimel Park in Winston-Salem. Without treatment, many patients with this diagnosis are given four months to live. But he refused to let go of the life he loves. And nearly four years and four brain surgeries later, Robert is brimming with life. He says we all need to remember: “You’re still here.”
