the fishermen Dr Fred Deegan chief of Salt Water Fisheries with the state Bureau of Marine Resources said that the large number of shrimp in the Sound this year combined with the amount of shrimp brought in from Louisiana since their season opened on May 20 will flood the shrimp market "I sympathize with those guys fishermen)' Deegan said "Most of them are operating on a break-even basis now The abundance of shrimp and the Louisiana catch will really bring prices down low" In 1983 the average price paid to shrimpers for 41-50 count per pound of "heads -off" shrimp was $399 The price was 3263 per pound in 1984 year I think 31 per pound would be a realistic estimate" Deegan said The shrimp season began today at 8 am Deegan said he didn't know how many Missis sippi fishermen were shrimping In Mississippi waters this morning He said he planned to make "fly over" later in the day to make a boat count "I think there are a lot of them out there" he said "based on the number of cars trucks and trailers I've seen parked around the harbor areas" Shrimp are more plentiful in the bay areas this year Deegan said because of the small amount of rainfall in recent weeks which causes a high salinity in the coastal waters In the last BMR shrimp sampling taken Friday Deegan said the sample catch showed the presence of between IV and 2 times the amount of shrimp found last year in the bay areas The sampling showed the average size of the shrimp to be about 50 to the pound The minimum count required for the shrimping season to be opened is 68 shrimp to the pound Deegan said the shrimp will stay in the bay areas as long as the salinity of the water remains high "When we get a heavy rainfall the shrimp will move back out again" Deegan said Ex-justice court judge Lambert
